Building Products
Our region has an abundance of raw materials and natural resources used in the building products industry. Hardwood products are plentiful throughout the Allegheny Mountain Range – with 11.9 million forested acres, West Virginia is the third most forested state in the nation. Popular Appalachian species include Red and White Oak, Poplar, hard and soft Maple, Cherry, Ash, Hickory and Basswood. Area sawmills produce hardwood lumber as well as hardwood chips, sawdust and mulch. Additionally, the region’s limestone reserves are used to make cement, and coal-fired power plants are used in the manufacture of wallboard.
