Bowles Rice proudly serves as West Virginia counsel to Fidelis Infrastructure, an all of the above energy infrastructure company that is developing a hydrogen production facility along the Ohio River near Point Pleasant in Mason County. The facility will be known as the Mountaineer Gigasystem and will help bolster West Virginia’s position as an energy innovation leader and create hundreds of quality jobs by capitalizing on the fast growing AI data center market. The initial investment by Fidelis is $2 billion, which is the projected cost of the first of four planned hydrogen production plants in Mason County.  An estimated 800 permanent jobs will be created at the site.

Hydrogen produced at the facility will be used to power a hyperscale data center, and will also be transported for use by other industries such as greenhouses, transportation, and steel production.  The Mountaineer Gigasystem will be net carbon negative, thanks to carbon capture and underground storage of some 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The carbon dioxide will be stored underground beneath state forests, wildlife management areas, and other state properties.  The facility will form part of the ARCH2 hydrogen hub.
